In the middle of the last century, unusual devices appeared in the United States that offered customers the opportunity to perfume themselves with the chosen scent for a small fee. These devices could be found in luxury hotels, restaurants and eateries. They offered scents such as Chanel No 5, Guerlain Shalimar and other popular perfumes.

The first vending machine model appeared in the 1950s, and its largest manufacturer was Mercury Steel Corp. However, perfume dispensers existed as early as the early 20th century, such as the Purity Perfume Vending Machine (1910) and the Michael Benedict Perfume Vendor (1904).

Interestingly, prototypes of vending machines appeared in Ancient Greece. The first known machine of Heron of Alexandria, dating back to 215 BC, sprayed holy water for a coin.

Today, perfume vending machines are experiencing a rebirth.
